Proposed Mississippi bill would offer $1000 reward to bounty hunters for undocumented immigrant deportations

DeSoto County officials proposed a controversial bill that would incentivize deportations of undocumented immigrants. House Bill 1484, introduced by state Representative Justin Keen, would provide a $1,000 bounty for each deportation, funded by the state’s general assembly.

District Attorney Matthew Barton framed the legislation as a local enforcement mechanism aligned with previous federal immigration policies. He stated the bill would empower local communities to support federal immigration law enforcement.

The proposed bill raises significant ethical and legal questions about local involvement in federal immigration matters and the potential for racial profiling or discriminatory practices.
