Orlando Padilla’s Journey to Uniting Community and Cannabis Culture

NELA native Orlando Padilla stands at the crossroads of his past and present, where he founded The Chronic as a way to build a brand that truly represents the cannabis community. Drawing from his rich life experiences, Padilla brings together the different facets of his world to solidify his place in the cannabis industry. He believes that everyone has a story worth telling, and he hopes that his journey will serve as a testament to resilience and the transformative power of perseverance.

Padilla’s connection to cannabis was born in the LA music scene. “I began as a DJ at parties and clubs, eventually moving into event promotion, marketing, and production. Throughout this journey, cannabis has been a constant companion, significantly shaping my path and growing with me,” Padilla shares.

When you ask people in Los Angeles what comes to mind when they hear “The Chronic,” most will immediately say “Dr. Dre” before you even finish the question. The iconic 1992 album has become an integral part of Los Angeles’ cultural fabric. Padilla chose the name for his business precisely for this reason. “The Chronic has been a staple in our community’s vocabulary since the early ’90s, and I’ve always recognized its significance as a brand. When licensing opportunities started to arise, I took the initiative to secure the IP and have been fortunate to move forward. With roots that go back decades, there’s a deep commitment to quality and authenticity associated with its presence, leaving no option but to deliver excellence,” says Padilla.

While its musical roots are essential, The Chronic is deeply rooted in community. Many businesses claim to be community-focused, but Padilla genuinely believes it begins with empowering those around you. “We’ve established strong partnerships with local businesses, working closely to uplift and strengthen our community. We have incredible neighbors and are thankful for their support and encouragement. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to organizations like the El Sereno Community Arts Center and The El Sereno Night Market, who have been with us from the start, providing unwavering support,” Padilla notes. These relationships aren’t just business transactions but a way of creating a space dedicated to being good neighbors, promoting community care, and making a positive impact in what was once a heavily stigmatized industry.

The Chronic strives for accessibility across all demographics. Padilla understands that cannabis plays a different role in everyone’s life and embraces that diversity. “We want everyone who walks into this store to feel a sense of connection and pride. Cannabis is a community where all are welcome, and when people engage with this brand, they see its value and commitment to the community,” Padilla explains. “Whether you’re a newcomer or a seasoned smoker, young or old, whether you’re looking for top-shelf products or pain relief for your grandparents, we’ve got you covered. We’ve created an inclusive, welcoming environment where everyone can discover the benefits of cannabis in a way that suits them best.”
