Nike’s Día de Muertos Collection
Nike has always been a brand that celebrates culture. With the start of November coming up, the brand has taken the initiative to highlight the forthcoming Día de Muertos festivities. Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday that celebrates the lives of loved ones who have passed away. It is a time to remember and honor those who have gone before us.
Nike’s Día de Muertos collection features some of the brand’s most popular sneakers, including the Air Max 1, Air Max 97, and Cortez. Each shoe is adorned with colorful sugar skull artwork, which is traditional for the holiday. The collection also includes T-shirts, hats, and socks. Nike’s Día de Muertos collection is a beautiful tribute to a cherished holiday and a wonderful way to celebrate Mexican culture.
Día de Muertos is a time-honored tradition in Mexico that dates back centuries. The holiday is typically celebrated from October 31st to November 2nd. Families gather to remember and honor their deceased loved ones. Ofrendas, or altars, are often set up in homes and cemeteries. These altars are decorated with photos of the deceased, candles, marigolds, and favorite foods and drinks of the departed. Sugar skulls are also a common sight during Día de Muertos celebrations.
Although NIKE has done a really nice job with these, I don’t think it’s right that they monetize our culture and tradition and not give back to the actual culture. This is something that has always bothered me. We need to do more as a Raza and find ways to help lift each other in our endeavors. If we see someone who’s designing shoes lets support them. If they are designing clothes, let’s help them.
As time goes on we will see more and more Latinos break headway into these huge multibillion dollar industries located right here in our backyard.
